History of the trumpet in classical music

After Bach and Handel, trumpet playing declined. Haydn, the great successor of these two gentlemen, not did well with trumpets. When Haydn entered the service of Prince Esterhazy, Prince music lover in Austria, his orchestra at first did not include trumpets at all.

As late as 1766, the permanent staff of this orchestra, one of the most outstanding in Europe, consisting of six violins and violas, a cello, a bass, one flute, two oboes, bassoons and two horns, but not four trumpets or horns. Several years later the resources of the orchestra was expanded so that the trumpets and drums could be added when necessary.

Even when Haydn made use of trumpets marked for them, played eighth or sixth above the horns. For this arrangement added thin drums for accompaniment. Probably felt the need to fill with something, and the battery seemed the most appropriate.

Mozart, who was at first a pupil of Haydn, but whose genius lifted him to a place above his master, seemed to share an aversion to Haydn for trumpets. This antipathy trumpets are due to the extremely sensitive nature. Until Mozart was ten, the sound of the trumpet was very painful for him, and he could not bear it.

As an adult he found little pleasure in trumpets, and used sparingly. In 1788 he wrote his three great symphonies, but only two of them made use of the trumpet. Beethoven wrote in general, for two trumpets and often used as solo instruments.
