Shania Twain, U2, Kanye West and Jimmy Sturr? Yes! Jimmy took home the statue in 2005 for his album "Shake, Rattle and Polka." Only in America could share a hearty hip-step dance around a platform with a hip hop group that wrote the chorus, "Its Hard Out Here for a Pimp!"
Polka is often associated with Poland, but the dance originated in Czechoslovakia in the mid-1800s, or did it? Like other dance moves, the roots of polka goes back to the working class. It is believed that the inventor of this half-step dance was a peasant girl, Anna Slezak. Well, that's the Czech version anyway. The Poles are strongly to the story that the dance was invented, but the Czechs popularized it. In the Polish version, a Czechoslovak passed through a Polish village and saw the dance that is performed by a Polish girl. They called the dance "Polka", which translates to "Polish woman."
After his early Polish or Czechoslovakian Polka was introduced in the ballrooms of Prague in 1835 and made his debut in Paris in 1840. Polka came to America in the mid-nineteenth century as he joined the waltz and the dance of the day. Its popularity decreased with the introduction of jazz and ragtime. People no longer wanted by half the way they preferred "boogie woogie."
Following World War World Polish immigrants adopted the polka as their national dance. Lawrence Welk and other bands of the war added to the newfound polka madness. Contemporary Polka America has a wide range of styles. The type of pressure "honky" style was given birth in Chicago, the fastest pace Slovenian style has its roots in Cleveland, the Dutchman with his music and the sound of oom-pah tuba salutes the Midwest, tex-mex version is the style of Conjunto, and polka polka punk or alternative is contributed by San Francisco. "Sausage Festival" or Wurstfests are similar to the German Oktoberfest. Eastern European culture is celebrated with food, drink and music Polka. One such festival is the annual 10-day 'Wurstfest' held in New Braunfels, Texas. This festival began in 1961 as the Sausage Festival and later became known as "Wurst Week." welcomed the first festival to the astonishment of its organizers 2,000 visitors due to the coverage of media worldwide. The event now welcomes more than 100,000 visitors to this annual smorgasbord of food, fun and music. There are many large and small theaters across the United States and we are all dedicated to promoting and preserving European heritage and traditions, including Polka.
Polka music enjoys a happy, optimistic, but a more detailed discussion of the songs are melancholy ballads of love gone wrong that can only be resolved by the alcohol! Hmmm, not unlike a good country and western tune - this definitely explains the appeal of America.
