Executive Summary
Telecommunications services have become an increasingly essential element not only for businesses, but also for residential consumers in Latin America. Therefore, the demand is not going to collapse in 2009 despite the recession. Company revenue for should continue to grow in most countries, driven by mobile telephony and broadband, but growth rates will be very small compared previous years. The worst services affected by the economic slowdown is likely to be those that provide entertainment, such as pay TV, digital media and corporate mobile services data. In addition, replacement of equipment will be affected, as corporate and residential users, although they will not stop using their cell phones and computers, which will wait for the economic crisis to raise before spending money on upgrades.
The fixed telephony market is likely to remain in its current impasse. In some of the major economies, mobile operators may need to seek additional revenues from SMS and low-cost value added services rather than new subscriptions, the market is near saturation. broadband development may require government efforts and regulation, in particular with regard to public welfare, such as e-health, e-education, electronic government and other social services. The universalization projects, however, could be crippled by a shortage of funds, unless they are included in the government measures against the crisis.
