One of the great songwriters - Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell is one of those artists who seem to be important, no matter what the decade. This year alone, during the 2010 Olympic Games, was asked to perform during the opening ceremony singing his song "Both Sides Now."
Joni Mitchell, a Canadian musician and composer, began performing in the mid-1960s and has never returned. Writing songs seems to come natural to Mitchell, making it one of the most prolific writers in history. Rolling Stone has gone so far as to coin Mitchell "One of the greatest songwriters ever." More Than a musician was greatly influenced by the daring and innovative style of Mitchell. As his career has ranged from late 60s to now, has also changed in that time, with music ranging from songs confessional folk-pop experimentation with inflections of jazz and world music multicultural. The songs he has written well have become well known through his voice or through the recreation of others. Mitchell "Woodstock" went mainstream through implementation the same is Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Many artists have enjoyed covering Mitchell Songs. Judy Collins took "Both Sides Now" and sent up letters to No. 8 in 1967. Annie Lennox covered "Ladies of the Canyon" to the B side of his 1995 hit "I can only love you." George Michael covered "Edith and the Kingpin" in 2004. Many of Mitchell's songs have been performed by numerous artists. Dianne Reeves, James Taylor, Allison Crowe, Rachel Yamagata, Aimee Mann and Sarah McLachlan have made "River." Tori Amos, Michelle Branch, Jane Monheit, the Prince and Diana Krall have sung "A Case of You."
So how does this amazing first artist to get discovered? Of course it was by starting small and singing in small clubs in his native Canada Western. Then he began performing in the United States, becoming a critical sensation in the folk scene in Detroit. In 1967 he signed a contract with Reprise Records and in 1968 released his first album. In this album was "Both Sides Now", one of Mitchell's most notable songs of his career.
Mitchell album "Blue", released in 1971, achieved platinum rating. It featured songs, "Carey", "My Old Many" and "The Last Time I Saw Richard. "His song" Clouds "won her first Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance.
Mitchell's voice has been easily long recognized for its distinctive style of guitar harmonica. His piano arrangements became more complex through the 1970s, which later deeply influenced by jazz, fusion and pop, folk and rock.
Between 1975 and 1980, Mitchell began experimenting with jazz pieces. The transition was difficult at first. His album "Hejira", written in 1976, is considered one of their most experimental albums ever. The audience enjoyed the good news but felt a little confused because of the enormous change in style. Her albums during this decade have not reached gold record and never reached the success he had his first album.
In 1980 she published "Shadows and Light" and its single "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" reached number 38 in Billboard.
In 1983, Mitchell began a world tour visiting Japan, Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and then back to the United States. Throughout the '80s, Mitchell began experimenting with synthesizers, drum machines and sequencers to launch his album "Chalk mark in a Rain Storm." The album has collaborated with artists from Willie Nelson, Billy Idol, Wendy and Lisa, Tom Petty, Don Henley and Peter Gabriel. The songs leaned toward political themes. Its kind of style began to change to world music.
In 1990, Mitchell rarely performed live longer, but continued taking albums. In 1994 released the Grammy-winning "Turbulent Indigo." In 1996 he was his "Hits" collection, which reached No. 161 in U.S. and No. 6 in the UK. In 1998, Mitchell's style shifted again with the launch of "Taming The Tiger." Mitchell's voice began to change as well. In 2002, Mitchell said in an interview with Rolling Stone that she was retiring and that he was unhappy with the music industry. But in 2006 launched album "Shine", which was inspired by the war in Iraq, political and environmental problems.
We have not heard the last of Joni Mitchell, however, despite his years of success, it is very possible that she still has some good songs left to be written and performed.
