Praise to the Lord - Hymns From St. Paul's Cathedral $7.08 ... |

OK, true confessions ... I am a modern worship leader and I LOVE hymns! The hymns are very good. They are majestic, and many contain more theology that the sermon average these days! I love old, conservative people who love them, but many more young people have taken (along with everything prior to 2000) when they worship. Well, I think even the Beatles are out of fashion (such ignorance!).
Somewhere amid cries the voice of reason. Now granted, some hymns are funeral marches, long, slow, dull and numb the brain. Some contain the theology of trash and some are simply irrelevant, in the use of language and content. Some are virtually unsingable, except to the monks of the 13th century! However, in this kind among the hymns are some of the best songs ever written, and some of the most majestic songs that I could never sing in praise!
Now, if you are young, and do not believe me check some of them out. Anthems such as: "And what may be", "Santo, Santo, Santo", "When I Survey the wondrous Cross" and "How Great Thou Art" are impressive. As worship leaders, we should be considering these songs for inclusion in our services of worship, because there is an incredible level of worship and teaching the songs.
My preference, personally and my church is that we sing a hymn at least all Sunday services. If you are creative and musical can play in such a way that is exciting and terrible, and you can venture into the very presence of God with these old songs. Besides, old in the church are delighted. So you win anyway. Trust me, guys, there are some Great Songs that you can not live without in the section of hymns!
But if you go a hymn, they do in a funeral march! Older people make love hymns in a new and fresh way, so pray and ask God for some ideas innovative to make the song into a modern masterpiece. Then looks at God all ages come together and worship with this old but new song!
Attention!
One word of caution, particularly to conservative Protestant denominations. There is a tendency to have great worship songs with the rhythm modern instruments, then insert the token for the oldies song, do this with just an organ or piano, played in a traditional style, but boring. I strongly caution against this because this only promotes the "us verses" scenario, the "music verses our music polarization we see in churches.
The best way is to roll worship only the anthem, no problems, and using a similar modern style. The majority of people most appreciate the fact that you are including your choice song, and what is yours, and so difficult to treat make it special, as if it were your own style song. Therefore, you can use well-played hymns to join hearts in worship, rather than having the song separately for the oldies.
Hymns must provide a wonderful theme to unite the old and young people in his church, but there are clues that will help bring these old songs to his great church of a new and cool. Our mission in worship is not to get stuck in the past, but they get the best of the past in this day and adapt the best of Christian heritage today's modern worship.
