About time! Alicia Keys has finally released his highly anticipated third studio album as I am. And what an album. It is definitely worth the four long years since The Diary Of Alicia Keys. Keys has stayed out of the general formula RnB and injected with 60/70 soul feels its new version.
As I Am is an family warmth that takes you back to the days of listening to the crackling sound of LPs on the turntable of the family. None of the 14 tracks are more part-time. But pure passion, pure energy and urgency is felt here in abundance. It also changes the course of his two previous albums, talk less keys during and between tracks and rather let his songs speak for itself.
Keys has predominantly written and produced as I am but she has enlisted the help of long time Krucial 'Creative partner Kerry Brothers, Linda Perry and even manages a collaboration with John Mayer in the lesson. This is a trusted version however, is full of vulnerability. Key non-frontal with arrogance, instead, truly a reflection on the life experiences we share as a collective. Love is a hot topic as is his insight into the journey so far has come.
No, his first single, is without doubt one of the best tracks on the album. There are many other outlets to mention standing, however, Wreckless Love is a bouncy rhythm and infectious second single Like You'll Never See Me Again tugs at your heartstrings (see video). Go ahead is a hymn no sense of a relationship that has well and truly passed its expiry date and expected course Good To Me is an inspirational song about life beyond fear.
As I Am is an album that will divide the masses. You will love or hate. A key sometimes sounds strained, not trying to produce a perfect product. However, I think it is its imperfections that make it perfect. Alicia Keys goes where many artists fear to tread. I applaud you for taking risks and refusing to conform. A real effort art.
